10 Gigabit Ethernet PCIe x1 Card
The AXAGON PCEE-10GR PCI Express network card brings 10 Gbit/s speed to your desktop PC, workstation, or server, requiring only the shortest PCIe x1 slot. Thanks to the Realtek RTL8127 chip with PCIe 4.0 x1 interface, you don’t have to give up a graphics card or M.2 slot to get fast networking, and with its passive heatsink the card remains completely silent. A 100 GB file that takes about 15 minutes to transfer over a gigabit network can be moved in just a few minutes if the device on the other end supports the same speed. The RJ-45 connector with a 10GBASE-T interface supports speeds of 1 / 2.5 / 5 / 10 Gbit/s with auto-negotiation, allowing connection to 10G networks as well as existing Gigabit and Multi-Gigabit infrastructure, including common 2.5G switches and routers. The card also supports network booting (PXE), Wake-on-LAN, and IEEE 1588 / 802.1AS time synchronization. The package includes both a standard bracket and a low profile bracket for installation in low-profile cases. It can also serve as a replacement for an integrated network card.
PCIe 4.0 x1: Throughput and Slot Compatibility
The card uses a single PCIe 4.0 lane with a speed of 16 GT/s, which after 128b/130b encoding overhead translates to approximately 15.75 Gbit/s in each direction. This is enough for the full 10 Gbit/s in full duplex while occupying just one lane—leaving x16 slots free for graphics cards or NVMe controllers. The card can be installed in x1, x4, x8, and x16 slots.
Older slots offer lower throughput: PCIe 3.0 x1 provides about 7.9 Gbit/s, and PCIe 2.0 x1 about 4 Gbit/s. The card cannot fully utilize 10 Gbit/s in those slots, but the bandwidth is sufficient for 2.5 Gbit/s (PCIe 2.0) or 5 Gbit/s (PCIe 3.0) operation.
Speeds 1 / 2.5 / 5 / 10 Gbit/s and Cabling Requirements
The card conforms to IEEE 802.3an (10GBASE-T), IEEE 802.3bz (2.5GBASE-T and 5GBASE-T), and IEEE 802.3ab (1000BASE-T) standards. Link speed automatically adjusts according to the connected device (switch, router, NAS). For 10 Gbit/s up to 100 m, a Cat 6A or better cable is required; Cat 6 supports 10 Gbit/s up to about 55 m. 2.5 Gbit/s runs over Cat 5e cable, 5 Gbit/s over Cat 6 (and depending on installation quality also Cat 5e), always up to 100 m. Auto MDI/MDIX automatically detects the cable type (straight-through or crossover).
Network Boot (PXE) and Wake-on-LAN
Support for PXE allows operating system booting over the network—for diskless workstations, mass OS deployment, or service and recovery environments. Wake-on-LAN can wake the PC from sleep or powered-off states using a Magic Packet (depending on motherboard support and BIOS/UEFI settings). Realtek RealWoW! technology enables remote wake-up over the internet.
Time Synchronization PTP, VLAN, and Offload Features
Hardware timestamping IEEE 1588 (PTP) and IEEE 802.1AS (gPTP) ensure precise time synchronization between network devices, useful in AV networks, industrial automation, and measurement systems. VLAN (IEEE 802.1Q) separates network traffic, IEEE 802.1P enables traffic prioritization, and Jumbo Frames up to 16 KB optimize large data transfers, e.g., between a PC and NAS. Checksum offload and Large Send Offload move part of the network processing to the card, reducing CPU load. Hardware ECC and CRC ensure integrity of transmitted data.
Passive Heatsink and Low Power Consumption
The controller is cooled by a passive finned heatsink without a fan, making the card completely silent in operation. The RTL8127 chip has a power consumption of approximately 1.95 W according to the manufacturer. Energy Efficient Ethernet (IEEE 802.3az) reduces power usage during periods of low network activity.
Installation, Drivers, and LED Indicators
The card is designed for Windows and Linux. The Realtek driver, available for download on the product page at www.axagon.eu, must be installed for the card to work. After installation, the card appears as Realtek PCIe 10GbE Family Controller in Device Manager. The green LED indicates data transfer, and the orange LED lights steadily at 10 Gbit/s; it remains off at 5 Gbit/s and lower speeds.
