5 Gigabit Ethernet PCIe x1 slot card
The AXAGON PCEE-G50 PCI Express network card delivers 5 Gbit/s speeds to your desktop computer, workstation, or server – twice as fast as 2.5G and five times faster than a standard gigabit connection, all while fitting into the shortest PCIe x1 slot. Featuring the Realtek RTL8126 chipset with a PCIe 3.1 x1 interface, you don't have to give up a graphics card or M.2 slot to get faster networking, and with its passive heatsink the card remains completely silent. A 100 GB file that takes about 15 minutes to transfer over gigabit networks can be moved in just a few minutes if the connected device supports the same speed. Often, no cable replacement is needed since 5 Gbit/s works over Cat 6 cable and, depending on installation quality and cable length, even Cat 5e. The RJ-45 connector with 5GBASE-T interface supports 1 / 2.5 / 5 Gbit/s speeds with automatic detection, allowing connection to 5G switches as well as existing Gigabit and 2.5G infrastructure. The card also supports network boot (PXE) and Wake-on-LAN. Besides the standard bracket, the package includes a low-profile bracket for installation in low-profile cases. It can also replace an integrated network card.
PCIe 3.1 x1: throughput and slot compatibility
The card uses one PCIe 3.1 lane with a speed of 8 GT/s, which equals approximately 7.9 Gbit/s in each direction after 128b/130b encoding overhead. This comfortably covers the 5 Gbit/s full duplex speed. The card occupies only one lane and can be installed in x1, x4, x8, and x16 slots, including PCIe 4.0 and 5.0 slots.
In a PCIe 2.0 x1 slot, bandwidth is limited to about 4 Gbit/s – the 5GBASE-T standard is not fully utilized, but operation at 2.5GBASE-T is unrestricted. For full 5 Gbit/s speed, a PCIe 3.0 or newer slot is required.
1 / 2.5 / 5 Gbit/s speeds on existing cabling
The card complies with IEEE 802.3bz (2.5GBASE-T, 5GBASE-T, NBASE-T) and IEEE 802.3ab (1000BASE-T) standards. Connection speed is set automatically depending on the device on the other end (switch, router, NAS). The IEEE 802.3bz standard is designed for existing twisted pair cables: 2.5 Gbit/s works over Cat 5e, 5 Gbit/s over Cat 6 (and depending on installation quality also over Cat 5e), up to 100 m distance. Upgrading from 1G to 5G usually does not require cable replacement. The Auto MDI/MDIX function automatically detects cable wiring.
Network boot (PXE) and remote wake-up (Wake-on-LAN)
PXE support enables booting the operating system from the network – ideal for diskless stations, mass OS deployment, or service and recovery environments. Wake-on-LAN wakes the PC from sleep or shutdown states using Magic Packet and Wake-up Frame signals, depending on motherboard support and BIOS/UEFI settings. The Realtek RealWoW! technology enables remote wake-up over the Internet.
VLAN and offload features
VLAN (IEEE 802.1Q) separates network traffic, IEEE 802.1P prioritizes it, and Jumbo Frames up to 16 KB optimize large data transfers, e.g., between PC and NAS. Checksum offload and Large Send Offload shift some network processing to the card, reducing CPU load.
Passive heatsink and low power consumption
The controller is cooled by a passive finned heatsink secured with spring pins, without a fan – making the card completely silent. Energy Efficient Ethernet (IEEE 802.3az) reduces power consumption during low network activity.
Installation, drivers, and LED indicators
The card supports Windows and Linux operating systems. Installation of the Realtek driver, available on the product page at www.axagon.eu, is required. After installation, the card appears in Device Manager as Realtek PCIe 5GbE Family Controller. The orange LED lights up when connected at any speed, and the green LED blinks during data transfer.
